2019-2020 Grants
WEEF funded $22,568 for the 2019-2020 school year. Congratulations to the following grant recipients:
1) Pina A. Alfiero WHS
Requested grant funding to incorporate the TI-Inspire CX II and the CBR 2 technology in her math lessons. This graphing calculator program is the latest Texas Instrument technology which will empower students to develop a deep understanding of abstract concepts. They will take an active role in their learning with hands on data collection and analysis, seeing firsthand how math and science affect the world around them.
2) Marcy C. Bunte SSS
Fostering A Love of Reading in kindergarten makes available to students reading material that enhances review and practice to coincide with the Fountas and Pinnell assessment tool. This request includes take home packages for students to reinforce their reading skills through rich and rigorous literature.
3) Erica DeVoe WHS
Rekindling A Love of Reading with book in hand! Championing novels that are connected to themes covered in the classroom, this personalized list of dynamic DeVoe selected literature will personalize the talk and give relevance to revitalizing reading from the book itself, discovering the value of the authentic narrative page by page.
4) Michelle Diaz WMS
Under the direction of Master Gardener, Michelle Diaz, a WMS Discovery Garden began in 2016 through a WEEF grant. That endeavor has flourished because students, teachers, parents, community volunteers, and members of the Westerly Garden Club have nurtured its development. To continue this project, the garden is in need of equipment and materials to keep it growing and thriving as a teaching tool as well. This WMS Garden Expansion Request formulated a plan to continue to work collaboratively and be supported by the WHS construction program to build a shed, sheltered deck, and workbench and acquire materials for classroom connections and professional development.
5) Anne Marie Doyle DCS
A Video Production request by the DCS librarian, We Video is a tool for students to present student learning with cutting edge technology. They will engage in video creations which will give them countless opportunities to present their knowledge and discover their voice by expressing their ideas in newscasts, book talks, storytelling, reports, etc.
6) Anthony Fusco WHS
This Inquiry Based Learning in History is personalized learning that will assist in deeper understanding of curriculum. This request uses Chromebooks to offer students opportunities to discover, create, discuss, collaborate, and take action.
7) Eileen Lenihan WMS
The Alternative Seating request is for standing desks to provide choice, customizing the learning environment. As the world of work has discovered, there are considerable benefits to alternative seating designs. It reduces the effects of sitting behind a desk for long periods of time, and gives collaboration opportunities in a less formal, comfortable configuration.
8) Meghan Riley DCS
This Visual Art and Technology request will generate the art of possibility using iPads in the DC art classes to explore and collaborate, and discover creative problem-solving ideas.
9) Susan Russell WMS
The Mock Trial Club will participate in the RI Mock Trial competition with support from WEEF funding. This will afford collaborative opportunities among a team of students supported by a Westerly attorney volunteering to partner with them. Students will read a case, write statements and examine their reasoning, and practice public speaking to present their case.
10) Michelle Simmons WMS
Flexible Seating request to design a next generation classroom. Research is clear that this alternative learning environment enhances student learning and supports unique learning styles. This resourceful approach has proven very successful in the workplace as well.
11) Hillary Turano WMS
Qball Microphone Manager increases student participation and engagement. Quiet Toss Qball is a wireless microphone wrapped in durable foam and soft enough to toss back and forth during classroom activities. It’s “fun and a dynamic way to engage and interact with your audience.”
12) Theresa Watson DCS – third grade
The math workshop model will be implemented this school year, so this STEM project request will support engaging centers and activities to be used after the daily mini lessons. This will expose students to quality resources to develop problem solvers and critical thinkers. Students will have hands on experiences in this interactive learning environment.
