Christine Byrne, a Kindergarten teacher at Springbrook Elementary and Beth Gunning, the ESL Coordinator  at Springbrook, collaboratively wrote a grant proposal aimed at closing the gap on literacy.  Their Literacy Home School Connection proposal, fully funded by WEEF, encouraged positive parent/teacher/student relationships and provided parents with the tools and techniques they needed to support their child's learning at home.

WEEF grant funds were used to purchase bilingual text books along with their English paired books, bilingual alphabet cards, English Alphabet flash cards, Spanish and English Letter Factory electronic games, and a fridge phonics spanish electronic games. The program invited parents and their children to six after-school training sessions where they learned how to apply the activities shared by their teachers through technology and hands-on experiences. Through these training sessions, parents learned the importance of the pre-literacy skills. Parents engaged in the activities with their child and then brought the activities home to practice until the next meeting. The children were very excited to return to school in the evening and share their learning with their parents. The parents were eager to learn strategies that would imapct their children's education.

"This program has been beneficial to our students, ourselves as educators and we have seen the success." To learn about other grants WEEF funded in 2014-2015, CLICK HERE.
